Change of MSc requirements regarding competence transfer from BSc to MSc

Oprettet den 27/03-2023

Summary

A BSc student can, as part of the BSc programme, choose 45 ECTS points of elective courses, and of these up to 10 ECTS points of MSc level courses. The elective courses can freely be chosen among all DTU’s offered courses (if the student satisfies the prerequisites for the selected courses). When surpassing to the MSc programme the student can apply for a competence transfer of GC points into TS courses if the completed BSc elective course(s) corresponds to a GC course on the chosen MSc programme.

Here, we propose a change to the current rule set, so that it is stated that students who have started their MSc-studies before 1. September 2023 are given the opportunity to apply for a competence transfer from GC points into either TS or EL courses, if they fall into above stated category.

Motivation

We believe both DTU and its students will benefit from rules and practices with flexibility to allow students to slightly change their specialization focus from first to later phases of their study; e.g., a BSc student on the ‘civil structure’ study line can change to ‘digitalization’ on the MSc programme by transferring Hydrodynamics 2 for an elective course on the MSc.

We find that the current rules and practices could and needs to be improved. The current set of rules (as of before 01.09.23) on elective courses and competence transfer from the BSc to the MSc programme supports students who from the beginning of the BSc knows what specialization to focus on, but is less supportive for the majority of students for whom the specialization becomes the result of an iterative process throughout both the BSc and MSc programme. The suggested rule change will support these students to a higher degree.
